Teach her to disregard cynics and to beware of too much sweetness. Teach her to sell her brains and brawn to the highest bidder, but never to put a price on her heart and soul.

Teach her if you can, not to compare herself to others, as there will always be greater or lesser persons. Teach her instead to surpass her own accomplishments.

Teach her there is a time to gamble, but there is a time to pass the dice.
Treat her gently, world, but don’t coddle her; the test of fire makes the finest steel. Teach her to have sublime faith in herself, as this will give her faith in mankind.

This is quite an order, world, but see what you can do. She is such a nice young person—our daughter.
